"KingT- 60% of the time, it works every time" (kngt)

I see a disproportionate number of Buick Encores given my small town population, like EVERYHWERE. Is it the looks? (doubt it), pricing? Dealer Incentives? loaners? Shoppers not looking at the competition? They sold 88,000 of them last year, 78,000 in 2016
Costs $23K to $32K. I mean, even if we compare the upmarket and even mainstream subcompact crossovers, it’s not very good vs. the competition (which I hardly see) based on reviews I have read/seen.
Car & Driver Summarizes it so:
HIGHS Intuitive and holistic infotainment suite, premium interior, comfortable ride.
LOWS Disappointing fuel economy, slightly gawky proportions, limited active safety features.
VERDICT Short of true luxury but still plenty nice.
Is that it? beats me.

Cheap, and better than a Chevy Trax I guess.

Never seen a Chevy Trax here . I guess they go check it out and find out that they can get a Buick for around the same price. Hmm

yes, less than 2k more expensive at MSRP.
I just feel like in the lease deal the Buick makes as much sense as the trax.

Because it is an Opel with a fancy badge, which old people still associate with premium-ish cars?

It’s the perfect vehicle for old women. Most have handicap or Vietnam War plates. Easy to drive, safe, high ride height, American make. It’s the women born in the 40’s and 50’s Lesabre and Park Avenue.

It’s like a ford focus but nicer and easier to get in and out of if you have a shitty hip while still being affordable. As much as I don’t like them I definitely see why they sell.

Easy: Popular brand for the elderly, but in a small package more appropriate for the elderly.
I do not dislike this trend at all. It’s better than land yachts.
I only recently learned there’s a Chevy Tax based on this thing. I’ve only seen two so far, but the Buicks are all over the place.

I’m getting old, as I’d seriously consider one as a DD. It’s basically a lifted Chevy Sonic with a better interior. A
bit slow, but nothing that I’m not used to already.

I think they’re kinda cute and pretty practical, not the huge monstrosities some crossovers are, and a little extra ground clearance for bad weather days. I’d never buy one myself, but if my wife wanted one I wouldn’t tell her no.

Plus Buicks have 4yr bumper-to-bumper
warranties, vs. 3 for Chevrolets.

Plud the Buick interior is much better overall, modern Chevy still hasn’t caught up to Buick in terms of just quality feel, even if you buy cars in the same segment for the same price.
I mean damn the problem extends to the same chassis’s.

You’ve been invaded by the blue hairs. Better dig a fighting hole and take up arms. If you don’t defend the town they’ll be slowing down traffic, and crowding the pharmacy lines before you know it!

My wife’s uncle has one and likes it. I point and laugh at him. But he likes it, he says it’s cute. Much more pointing and laughing ensued. But whatever. They get a high seating position and no cargo space. Perfect!

If it’s anything like Cruze vs. Verano, you also get better sound deadening, nicer cheap plastics and better seats. Plus given that dealer labor is US
$140
/hr in many urban areas in the US, a
$1500 1yr
bumper-to-bumper warranty makes sense
, especially if you aren’t inclined to do your own work
.

It checks all the boxes:
Comfortable
Affordable
AWD
high(er) driving position
Space for some stuff and/or some
people
It does drive pretty nice (soft, quiet, smooth, etc... but slow)
It has decent sound system
That’s all some people want really . And overall proportions aside, I don’ t think the refreshed version looks that bad.

I actually quite like how they look and as a cheap comfy DD I would almost consider one. It's got that stocky hatchback profile like my old mazda 2. And given the cars I've owned over the years it would feel like a Bentley to me I'm sure.

Exactly. They make so much more sense than big sedans. To access, they’re a step up instead of bending down, but not too high like a Tahoe or other body-on-frame. Smaller size is better for older drivers and maneuvering , still with an interior big enough to carry groceries (helped out by a bagger, of course) or grandkids. Price new is very reasonable, especially considering these are spouses of retired men that only rely on pensions and government services, and a good bit of traditional luxury (leather, heated seats, etc. ) is there. The Ford Escape, especially since 2008, is also very popular with old women.

The 2017 facelift did improve things on the outside a bit, though. Little bit less unpainted plastic cladding on the front bumper .
And the interior was stepped up a bit, too. Better differentiated from the Trax.

I think it’s because you can lease one for $199 a month, and it has that Bu ick badge older buyers like (even though it shares nothing with the Buicks they grew up with).
